He stayed up a while longer, going over the books for the plantation, which he knew Zebulon would demand, as soon as he mustered up the courage to claim what was now legally his, even if he had managed to buy them a few month’s grace. His father didn’t go in for legalese, and Reynolds was far too clever a lawyer to allow his purpose to be misinterpreted. And damn Edwin, too, for that matter.

And damn July, as well. The heat was almost unbearable, sweat trickling down his back. Even the rain was a nuisance. It made things damper without actually affording any relief. At this point he would almost give his immortal soul for a good thunderstorm sweeping out of the west, bringing cooler air down from the mountains.

To hell with this. Wetting his fingers, he pinched out the candles on the desk, then exited the room. Outside, he nearly ran into Bethsheba, one of the house slaves.

“Do you need anything, Master Ross?” she asked.

“No.” He took a deep breath. “You have all done well, the last several days, Bethsheba. Please convey my thanks to everyone. And there will be no outside work tomorrow or Sunday for the field hands, beyond what is absolutely necessary. Milking the cows and feeding the animals and such. And no house work for any of you. My sister and I can see to our own needs for a day or two. After all you have done, it’s the least Clara and I can do.”

“No work?” Her dark eyes were round with shock. At his mother’s insistence, the slaves had always been given Sunday mornings off for religious services, except during the planting season, when every hand had been set to work. But for a slave to have two full days off in a row was almost unheard of. “Master Hillman will not approve,” she ventured, then dropped her eyes at her boldness.

“Master Hillman is not in charge of Red Bud,” he said firmly, and was rewarded by the slightest hint of a smile.

“Do you require anything else, Master Ross?” And now, her eyes were frankly inviting. She set her hand on his shirt sleeve, and swayed closer. The warmth seemed to burn, and as he looked at Bethsheba’s ripe young body, his cock swelled in the confines of his breeches.

He could take her. He knew that. She would not protest. Female slaves, especially attractive ones, learned very quickly not to fight. The ones who did were beaten or sold off to cruel masters. The ones who did not often reaped the rewards in the form of preferential treatment.
